Why won’t my washer drain?
On most front-load washers there is a drain pump filter behind a small door at the bottom front. It catches coins, buttons, hair ties and small socks before they reach the pump, and when it clogs, the washer can’t drain or spin.
- Switch the washer off and unplug it.
- Put down towels and a shallow tray, because a lot of water may come out.
- Open the access flap, drain the water through the small hose if there is one, then unscrew the filter slowly.
- Clear the debris, rinse the filter, and screw it back in firmly so it doesn’t leak.
Also check that the drain hose behind the washer isn’t kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe. If the filter and hose are clear and the washer still won’t drain, the drain pump has usually failed. See our Miele page for Miele-specific advice.
Why won’t my washer spin or unlock?
Not spinning: a washer won’t spin with water still in the drum, so a drain problem often looks like a spin problem. It also won’t spin a badly unbalanced load. One heavy towel or a bath mat on its own is a common culprit. Redistribute the load and run a spin-only cycle. If it still won’t spin, the door lock, the motor or the control is the next suspect.
Door won’t unlock: front-loaders keep the door locked while there is water in the drum or the drum is still turning. Wait a few minutes after the cycle ends. If the drum is empty and still and the door stays locked, run a drain-and-spin cycle. If it still won’t release, the door lock has likely failed. Most manuals show an emergency release, but don’t force the door.
Leaks, smells and noise
Leaks: check the rubber door boot for tears or a trapped sock, and check how much detergent you use. High-efficiency washers need only a small amount of HE detergent, and too much creates suds that push water out of the front. A leak from underneath or behind usually means an inlet hose, the pump or a tub seal. Turn off the water valves behind the washer and call us.
Musty smell: front-loaders seal tightly, so moisture stays inside. Wipe the door boot dry, leave the door and detergent drawer slightly open between washes, and run the manufacturer’s cleaning cycle about once a month.
Loud rumbling during spin that gets worse over time is the classic sign of worn drum bearings. It is a bigger repair, so we’ll give you the price in writing and tell you plainly whether it is worth it on your machine. A sudden scraping or clicking can be something caught between the drum and the tub, such as an underwire or a coin, and it should be removed before it causes damage.
