Why won’t my dishwasher drain?
Most drain problems start at the filter, and you can check it in a few minutes:
- Turn the dishwasher off and, where you can, unplug it or switch off its breaker.
- Remove the lower rack and scoop or sponge out the standing water.
- Take out the filter at the bottom of the tub, usually by twisting it, and rinse it under warm water. Look for broken glass, labels, fruit pits or bones in the sump below.
- Check the drain hose under the sink for kinks, and if you have an air gap on the countertop, take its cap off and clear any debris.
- Just installed a garbage disposal? The plastic knockout plug in the disposal’s dishwasher inlet has to be removed. If it wasn’t, the dishwasher can’t drain at all.
If the filter, hose and air gap are clear and water still sits in the tub, the drain pump has usually failed or is jammed. On Miele, this shows up as a drain fault; our Miele page walks through Miele’s own steps for F11.
Why are my dishes coming out dirty?
- Clean the filter. A clogged filter recirculates dirty water. Many manufacturers recommend rinsing it every few weeks.
- Clear the spray arms. Pop them off, run water through, and clear the holes with a toothpick.
- Run the kitchen tap hot first. If the first water in is cold, the dishwasher has to work harder to heat it.
- Use rinse aid and the right detergent. Use dishwasher detergent only, never dish soap. Spotting and film often mean hard water and too little rinse aid.
- Load so the arms can spin. A tall pan or utensil sticking down can stop an arm turning.
If dishes are still dirty after all of this, the wash pump, the heater or a sensor may be at fault. That is a technician’s diagnosis.
Dishwasher leaking or won’t start
Leaking from the door usually means a worn or dirty door gasket, suds from using dish soap or too much detergent, or a dishwasher that isn’t level, so water runs to the front. Leaking from underneath points to a pump seal, a hose clamp, or the water inlet valve. Turn off the water supply under the sink and call us. Many integrated dishwashers, including Miele and Bosch, also have a leak-protection system that shuts off the water and shows a fault until the leak is fixed.
Won’t start: check that the door clicks fully shut and that the control lock (often called child lock) isn’t on. Your manual shows how to turn it off. If the door latches and the panel lights up but nothing runs, the door latch switch or the control board is the likely fault.
