Why won’t my gas burner light?
A sealed gas burner needs three things: clean ports, a cap sitting flat in the right place, and a strong spark. After a boil-over or a wipe-down, moisture around the igniter is the most common cause, and the burner usually lights again once it dries. Next, clear food from the ports with a soft brush and make sure the cap is centered.
If you hear no clicking at all from any burner, check the breaker; the igniters need power even on an all-gas range. If one burner clicks without lighting while the others work, its igniter or spark wire is the likely fault. If the range clicks with every knob off, a spark switch has usually failed. If you smell gas, don’t light anything or use switches or phones inside. Turn the burner off, leave the house, and call your gas company or 911 from outside. Never use a gas oven or range to heat your home.
Why won’t my oven heat?
Gas ovens usually light with a hot-surface igniter. It has to get hot enough to open the gas valve, and as it wears it can glow orange without ever reaching that point. The oven stays cold, or takes a very long time to preheat. It is one of the most common oven repairs we make.
Electric ovens heat with a bake element at the bottom and a broil element at the top. If only the broiler works, the bake element or its relay has usually failed. Sometimes you can see a break or a blister on the element.
Wall ovens and dual-fuel ranges rely heavily on the control board, so if the display misbehaves or the oven shuts off mid-bake, the control or a sensor is often involved.
Oven baking too hot or too cold?
Before booking a repair, put an inexpensive oven thermometer on the middle rack, set the oven to 350°F, and let it preheat fully plus another 15 minutes. Ovens cycle above and below the setting, so read it a few times. If the average is far off, the temperature sensor, the convection fan or the calibration is the likely cause. Many ovens let you adjust the calibration from the controls, and your manual explains how. If the oven swings wildly or keeps drifting, call us.
Induction cooktops and self-cleaning ovens
Induction only works with magnetic cookware. If a fridge magnet doesn’t stick firmly to the bottom of the pan, the zone won’t start. If the pan passes and the zone still won’t start, or the cooktop shows an error, the power board or a coil needs a technician.
Self-clean runs the oven at very high temperatures, and the door stays locked until it cools. If the oven is cold and still locked, the lock motor or switch has failed. Don’t force the door. One practical tip: avoid running self-clean the day before a holiday or a big dinner. If an older part is going to fail, the heat of a clean cycle is often when it happens.
