Refrigerator symptoms and their usual causes
| Symptom | Usual cause | Can you check it? |
|---|---|---|
| Fridge warm, freezer still cold | Evaporator fan, a defrost fault, or blocked air vents | Partly: check the vents and settings |
| Both compartments warm | Dirty condenser, condenser fan, start relay, or a sealed-system fault | Partly: clean the condenser |
| Water pooling under the crisper drawers | Clogged or frozen defrost drain | No, usually a technician |
| Water on the floor | Drain pan, water filter housing, supply line or inlet valve | Partly: check the filter is seated |
| Ice maker not making ice | Water supply off, an old filter, the inlet valve or the ice maker | Partly: check the supply and filter |
| Frost on the freezer walls | Door seal, frozen drain, or defrost system | Partly: check doors and gaskets |
| Buzzing, rattling or clicking | A fan hitting ice, a worn fan motor, or a start relay | No, usually a technician |
Why is my refrigerator warm but the freezer is still cold?
On most refrigerators with one cooling coil, the cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fresh-food side by a fan. If that fan stops, or the coil ices over because the defrost system has failed, the freezer stays cold while the refrigerator slowly warms. Packed shelves blocking the air vent between the two compartments can cause the same symptom.
Many luxury units, including most full-size Sub-Zero models, work differently: the refrigerator and freezer each have their own cooling system. On those, one warm side means a fault in that side’s own system. Either way, a technician needs to find which part has stopped.
Check these before you call
- Confirm the settings. Most manufacturers recommend about 37–38°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer.
- Move food away from the air vents, usually at the back or top of the compartment.
- Make sure each door closes on its own and the gaskets are clean and sealing.
- Clean the condenser coils if they are dusty. Where they sit depends on the model: behind a top grille on many built-ins, behind the toe-kick grille on most freestanding units.
Keep food safe while you wait. FoodSafety.gov advises keeping the refrigerator at 40°F or below and the freezer at 0°F or below. Its cold storage chart explains what to keep and what to throw out.
Why is my refrigerator leaking water?
Where the water appears tells you most of what you need to know:
- Inside, under the crisper drawers: the defrost drain is clogged or frozen. Water that should flow to the drain pan backs up into the cabinet instead. This often goes with frost on the freezer’s back wall.
- On the floor at the front: often the same drain, overflowing, or a cracked drain pan underneath.
- On the floor after a filter change: a water filter that isn’t fully seated, or a cracked filter housing.
- Behind or under the unit: the water supply line or the inlet valve that feeds the ice maker and dispenser.
If water is running onto the floor steadily, close the supply valve to the refrigerator, usually under the sink or behind the unit, and call us.
Ice makers, frost and noise
Ice maker stopped: confirm the ice maker is switched on, the supply valve is open, and the water filter isn’t long overdue. A clogged filter starves the ice maker before the water dispenser shows any problem. If all three are fine, the inlet valve or the ice maker module is the usual repair.
Frost building in the freezer: humid air is getting in through a door or gasket, or the defrost system has stopped clearing the coil. Our frost buildup guide walks through every cause. It is written for Sub-Zero, but the causes apply to most brands.
New noises: a fan blade hitting ice makes a rattle or scraping sound and points to a defrost problem. A loud buzz or repeated clicking from the back can be the condenser fan or the compressor’s start relay. Neither will fix itself, and catching them early can protect the compressor.
Repair or replace your refrigerator?
For a built-in luxury refrigerator, repair is almost always the better choice. These units are designed for a long service life, and replacing one means matching the opening and often the custom panels and cabinetry.
For a standard freestanding refrigerator, it depends on age and the fault. Fans, valves, sensors, ice makers, gaskets and boards are worth fixing on most units. A compressor or sealed-system failure on an older standard refrigerator is the case where replacing often makes more sense. If you do replace, the ENERGY STAR refrigerator guide is a good place to compare efficient models. We give you the diagnosis and price in writing so the decision is easy.

Common questions
Refrigerator repair, answered
Why is my fridge warm but the freezer cold?
On most single-coil refrigerators, a failed evaporator fan or a defrost fault stops cold air reaching the fresh-food side. Check the vents aren’t blocked and the settings are right. If it doesn’t recover within a day, call for a diagnosis.
What temperature should my refrigerator be?
Most manufacturers recommend about 37–38°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer. FoodSafety.gov advises 40°F or below and 0°F or below.
Why is there water under my crisper drawers?
The defrost drain is usually clogged or frozen, so melt water collects inside instead of draining away. It needs to be cleared, and the cause of the freezing checked.
How often should I clean the condenser coils?
Follow your manufacturer’s guidance. Sub-Zero, for example, recommends every 6 to 12 months. More often if you have pets or a dusty space.
Is it worth fixing an old refrigerator?
Built-in luxury units almost always, yes. For a standard refrigerator, most part failures are worth fixing, while a compressor failure on an older unit often isn’t. We’ll tell you plainly which side of that line you’re on.
